Do you wear the items in your closet the same way? Are you bored with your wardrobe and ready for something different? As the seasons change, stretching pieces for more wearability means versatility. In my post, Five Awesome Tips to Take Your Summer Wardrobe into Fall, I show how to transition some of those summer pieces into fall.

Versatility also means being able to wear pieces for different activities or going from day to evening or even into the weekend. Having pieces that you can wear multiple ways makes for a much more interesting wardrobe and easy styling.

My tips for restyling the same item are

  •  Layers or finishing pieces
  • Footwear
  • Accessories

In Putting Me Together blog, Audrey shows how to style a simple summer dress three ways.

Three looks wearing the same foundational piece whether a pair of pants, a dress, skirt or blouse, is easy to achieve.

Audrey simply changed out her accessories. She took the pretty floral dress from casual and fun to perfect for a wedding or summer night out.

Tip #1

I love jackets, wraps, cardigans and ponchos.  You can easily change the feel of a piece by throwing on a jacket. A jean jacket makes a dressy dress feel more casual. A boyfriend jacket makes your favorite khakis and stripped t-shirt a more business appropriate look.

Tip #2

Footwear is the key to changing any look. A skirt or dress with a cute pair of tennis shoes and you have an easy shopping outfit that is comfortable for dashing in and out of stories. Change out the tennis shoes for a pair of strappy heels and you are ready to grab a cocktail with your boo. Boots are so fun and extend any look into the cool seasons.

Tip #3

Accessories from a scarf or belt to jewelry are like magic. You can add bling to a look and instantly take it from day to evening. Throw on a belt and cinch in the waist and voila, a new dress!

Need examples?  Sometimes, it is difficult to envision, so I’ve provided some examples of how I used the three tips..sometimes combining all three to change a piece from my closet.

This skirt from Evereve is so fun in camo. It can easily move from casual to a bit dressier and from summer to winter.

In the first example topped it with a graphic band t-shirt. I love me some Aerosmith. I threw on my Adidas tennies and it makes for a great errand outfit.

Next, I topped it with a jean blouse, black Franco Sarto booties and I’m ready to meet some girlfriends for a cocktail on the patio.

Lastly, I glammed it up just a bit with a black blouse,  cross necklace and black heels.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, high waist pants are here. Personally, I like the fact that my muffin top can be contained. No more overage or unsightly butt crack sightings. Give me high waist any day vs. low cut.

This pair is from last season at Altar’d State in a jean material with a thin white stripe.

First, I took it casual with a fun graphic, long sleeve t-shirt and yes, being kind is cool.

Next, I took it a little more upscale with a white, open weave, bell sleeved blouse and white Steve Madden croc booties.

Lastly, I turned up the heat with a cropped top from Bebe. Add some hot pink pumps and pearls and the outfit is what I call saucy.

This beautiful, floral blouse is from Anthropologie. Colors of turquoise, gold and russet make it extremely easy to pair with different bottoms. Monochromatic is a great way to add height. At only 5’4″ I need all the lengthening I can get. The shoes are from White House Black Market and were one of those, OMG, I gotta have ’em impulse purchases. The skirt in lace is a great balance to the bold  pattern of the blouse.

In the 2nd version, I paired it with white jeans from Target. The turquoise heels are are traded for the same white booties featured above. You could easily make this more casual with white tennis shoes.

In the 3rd version, I bring out the gold in the blouse with a short skirt and cognac high boots.

I’d love to see how you use these tips or your personal tips for making an outfit do double and triple duty. Send me your pics or tag me. Either way, I hope this post has inspired you to try some new ways to wear your clothes and stretch your wardrobe.
