Three Easy Tips for Layering
Layering is an easy way to add visual interest to any outfit. Throw on a jacket, a vest, scarf or even a statement piece of jewelry and voila, you have an entirely different look to a meh outfit. Plus as the seasons change, laying allows for extra warmth or when the mornings are cool, but when the afternoonns heat up, you can remove top layers to remain comfortable.
1. Add a jacket or blazer
A leather jacket is fairly light weight as jackets go. Leather lasts forever and never really goes out of style.
The one pictured here in black is over 20 years old and I wear it every year. Today there are many more less expensive options in faux leathers and they look just as cool and trendy as the real thing.
The boyfriend blazer in option #2 is another purchase from many seasons ago. Roll the sleeves and expose the silky, striped lining.
The last option is a White House Black Market moto jacket in white. The fabric is machine washable that includes some spandex to allow a little give to the fit. The jacket features great detailing with silver zippers, snaps and buckles.

2. Vests
Regardless of whether vests remind you of your grandpa or not, they are on-trend this year. The first two options you see are both sweater vests and don’t provide as much warmth as they add some punch to the looks.
The third look is a leather vest that I’ve paired with some faux leather pants in an animal print.
Shopping options
- Casual open front tunic – 13 delicious fall colors some colors feature pockets
- Button down sweater vest – Available in seven colors

3. Wraps and Ponchos
The versatility of wraps, shawls, and ponchos are what make them great for jeans, pants, skirts, and even your most glamorous cocktail dress. Plenty of occasions call for an extra layer for warmth and a wrap is almost like a stylish blanket to-go.
The pale pink one in the first photo was a Fabfitfun item and when I’m not wearing it, it serves as a chair throw.
The 2nd wrap includes a hood, belt, and snaps to make armholes.
The 3rd version is a T.J. Maxx find in a poncho-style. The fringe edge adds a little extra fun to the look.
Shopping Options
- Moss rose wrap – eight color combinations
- Green oversized bat-wing kimono style knit sweater – 14 colors
- Poncho style hooded cape with fringed hem – eight colors
