Leggings can be fashionable without being frumpy
You may not know this, but leggings are the new skinny jeans. They’re comfortable and versatile – from running errands to going out with friends. But what’s a gal over 50 who wants to look fashionable supposed to do?
Wearing a crop top with your favorite pair of leggings might be a little too racy for some, and you don’t want to look like you are on your way to yoga class. So I’ve got you covered! Here are 5 tops ideas to pair with leggings that will have you feeling stylish and comfortable:
1) Crew Neck Sweater 2) Tunic Tops 3) Button-Down Shirt 4) Casual T-Shirt 5) Shift Dress
1) Crew Neck Sweater or Turtle Neck
A crew neck sweater is a great top to wear with leggings. It’s a casual look that can be dressed up by wearing black leggings and knee-high boots or kept more casual by pairing it with flats. There are so many cute crew neck options from a sweatshirt material to a knitted sweater material. Of course, another option is the turtle neck, and hasn’t Diane Keaton made the style oh-so-chic?
Do you remember the scene from “Something’s Gotta Give” when Jack Nickolson’s character, Harry, asks Erica, “what’s up with the turtlenecks? I mean it’s the middle of summer.” To which she replies, “Well. I guess I’m just a turtleneck kind of gal.”
Diane Keaton is an actress and an author and in her book “Let’s Just Say It Wasn’t Pretty.”
She teaches people how to be more creative about their clothes and their lives in general. One thing that Diane stresses is the importance of wearing what you want, not just what everybody else tells you to wear. And now I love her even more.
An added bonus is that the turtle neck helps hide the turkey neck. O.k I said it and it is a thing o.k.?
A crew or turtle neck is a great look to have in your wardrobe if you’re someone who likes to dress up or down depending on the occasion. For a casual day at work, throw a cardigan on or add a blazer and pair it with black leggings and flats for something office-appropriate. On weekends, make it more fun by wearing boots with this outfit.
For an easy fall look that doesn’t require too much effort, try layering a long sleeve shirt underneath your crew neck sweater! You’ll be comfortable but still stylish throughout these chilly months of the year.

2) Tunic Tops
While leggings are mostly used for casual wear and lounging, they can be worn with a dressy top to take them up a notch. This is great if you want to look cute in leggings but still have the versatility of wearing jeans or pants. Tunic tops are a great option for leggings because they cover the hips and booty. Plus, many tunics have pockets! These can be worn with leggings or skinny jeans.
So if leggings aren’t your thing, it is an easy switch to wear skinny-legged pants or jeans. Just remember this tip, if your top is loose, oversized or baggy, your pants shouldn’t be or you’ll end up looking like a lumpamuffalous.
Fit for every season, tunic tops are perfect to team up with leggings during the winter or summer days. With styles like stripes and dots, these simple silhouettes can take you from your morning workout session to lunch out with your besties.

3) Button-Down Shirt
Another great top to pair with leggings is the classic button-down shirt. A button-down shirt is a great legging look that’s perfect for work or going out. You can dress up this leggings outfit by pairing it with leopard heels and sheer tights, but you could also go casual by wearing sneakers or flats.
Your favorite button-down shirt can go upscale when combined with a pair of leggings which makes it perfect for work or going out on special occasions. Consider tying your shirt at the waist and adding some chunky jewelry and heels. A blazer or even a leather jacket adds a bit of class to the look.

4) Basic T-Shirt
A basic t-shirt is another leggings look that’s great for casual days. If you are uncomfortable displaying all of your assets (tehehehe), throw on a button-down shirt over the top. Booties, flats or tennis shoes all work with this simple, casual look.
When you wear leggings with a t-shirt, you can change the look quickly by adding some chunky jewelry and a blazer.
The look of combing dressy with more casual pieces is so trendy right now, so experiment with your favorite graphic t-shirt or plain white/black t-shirt with your jackets or blazers and some leggings.
